Overview
How to use sodium cyanide in extracting gold
The process of extracting gold from sodium cyanide mainly includes the following steps:
1.Cyanide leaching:
The ground ore is mixed with sodium cyanide solution and placed in a leaching tank. During the leaching process, sodium cyanide reacts with gold to form a soluble [Au(CN)₂]⁻ complex, which dissolves the gold from the ore into the solution.
2.Solid-liquid separation:
Separation of the gold-containing cyanide solution from the solid residue for further processing
3.Gold RecoveryActivated carbon adsorption:
The cyanide solution containing gold is passed through the activated carbon column, and the gold is adsorbed on the activated carbon. Then the gold is desorbed from the activated carbon using a hot alkaline cyanide solutionElectrolytic purification:
The desorbed gold solution is electrolytically deposited to obtain gold mud, which is then smelted to obtain pure gold4.Tailings treatment:
The tailings after leaching need to be treated with bleaching powder or sodium hypochlorite to decompose residual cyanide and ensure environmental protection standards are met.-
Working principle
The working principle of sodium cyanide gold extraction is that sodium cyanide solution reacts chemically with gold in gold ore to generate soluble gold-cyanide complex, and then recovers gold by displacement or adsorption.
The specific process is as follows:
Chemical reaction:
Under aerobic conditions, sodium cyanide (NaCN) solution reacts with gold in gold ore to generate soluble gold-cyanide complex [Au(CN)₂]⁻. The reaction equation is: 4Au + 8CN⁻ + O₂ + 2H₂O → 4[Au(CN)₂]⁻ + 4OH⁻
1.Displacement reaction: The generated [Au(CN)₂]⁻ complex can be used to recover gold by zinc powder displacement method. Zinc powder reacts with [Au(CN)₂]⁻ to form gold and zinc cyanide complexes. The reaction equation is: 2[Au(CN)₂]⁻ + Zn → 2Au↓ + [Zn(CN)₄]²⁻
2.Adsorption recovery:Another method is to use activated carbon to adsorb the gold complex and then recover the gold by high-temperature desorption. When the precious liquid passes through the activated carbon column, the gold complex is adsorbed and then the gold is recovered by high-temperature desorption
Electrolytic purification: The gold obtained by adsorption or displacement can be purified by electrolysis to produce high-purity gold, or the gold mud can be directly smelted into gold ingots

Safety issues
Sodium cyanide is a highly toxic substance, and a small amount of it can be fatal to the human body.
Strict safety measures are required during use, including wearing gas masks, protective glasses, chemical protective clothing and gloves, etc. to ensure the safety of operators.
In addition, the workplace should be well ventilated to avoid the accumulation of sodium cyanide vapor.
In the event of a leak or poisoning accident, the emergency response plan should be immediately activated to ensure the safety of personnel and the environment.
